The Insurance Museum will engage audiences with the story of insurance – how it works, how it supports individuals and communities, and how it drives innovation and emerging technologies. One audience of particular importance to us is schools, colleges and young people, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds. They will be the clients and insurers of the future, and engaging with them now will help equip them with the insight and tools to make confident decisions about their personal finances and careers. Whether they are buying insurance for a car or scooter, starting a business, or even considering a career in our sector, the IM will help them understand the opportunities ahead.
The story and heritage of insurance reveal how the sector has evolved over time, continually adapting to an ever-changing world; from the Industrial Revolution to international maritime trade. The “marine slip” first appeared in the 1680s at Edward Lloyd’s Coffee House. Over the centuries it became more formalised, eventually taking the shape still recognised in today’s market. This continuity shows the enduring connection between historical events, developments in insurance and the practices that underpin the sector today.
We will achieve our goals with the support of the insurance community. Our aims are to:
The Insurance Museum will also be a space for the insurance community itself: a place to work, run events, deliver CPD, host early career workshops and bring colleagues, clients, friends and families.
Thank you for your interest and support. Together, we can create a cultural and educational institution that safeguards our heritage, inspires future talent and strengthens public understanding for generations to come.
